Fossils

Miss Bennett at Field Museum of Natural History
Did I tell you how much I LOVE science? I can remember all of my science teachers from when I was in grade school  I have been buying and finding (since this past summer) lots of fun resources for our class to use throughout this new science unit.

Our 2nd Grade Ohio Content Statement: Some kinds of individuals that once lived on Earth have completely disappeared, although they were something like others that are alive today.

As we understand that fossils and bones are artifacts that represent things that lived before us, we will be able to take further steps into our exploration. Fossils will help us better understand how we know what these organisms looked like.To get us excited about the topic, we will first learn about dinosaurs. Then we will learn more about extinct organisms and existent organisms.  Remember that "once living things" can include animals and plants. Think about extinct and existent animals like the mammoth and the elephant, the iguana and the stegosaurus,  We then ask ourselves: Why did these once living things die off (like the mammoth)? Why have some living things lived for so long (like the horse)? How did their habitats change? And did these changes put them in danger?
